Real History vs Lies Told
The real history can be found under "The Demon Wars" as well as the timeline.
This document is about keeping track of the lies told to different groups of people and what they each individually or as a group believe.
Orthodox Yan Belief
Fake History Told to the Commoners
According to generally accepted official mythology as propagated by the Cult of Yan and the political powers of the day, Solfrey are a race of super human immortals, angels, who brought magic to the world. Envious and coveting the glory of the Solfrey, some commoners began to worship demons, who are evil gods that only sought destruction on the world.
This precipitated the Demon Wars, where the Solfrey fought the demons. The Solfrey eventually prevailed under the leadership of R3, the hero who slayed the demon king. However, in order to close the demon portals and to end the wars once and for all, the Solfrey had to make the ultimate sacrifice, giving up their immortality.
But from this, the Solfrey knew that the commoners had to be controlled, for they are the source of great evil. As such, since this is the official ideology, commoner demon worshippers is a real thing and accusations of demon worshipping are common. These are people who for whatever reason resent the status quo and want to use demons to obtain change. But ironically the demons are not devious nor manipulative, so they just kill their own worshippers.
While this sets apart commoners as vulnerable to demon influence and invite rebellious commoners to try to invite demon power, the mechanism for doing so is incorrectly propagated and wrong. Commoners are told that they originally summoned the demons by demon worship, which of course does not work. Seeking out demons to worship only gets them killed. It doesn't lead them down the correct path of gaining demon power, which is undoing the division. Smarter rebels might realize this and try to guess that something else is afoot.
Naturalist Philosophy
Incorrect History That is Taught to Many Solfrey (Heretical)
While some religious Solfrey fundamentalists still believe that the Solfrey are a different race than commoners, over the past ~400 years that has become to be seen as politically motivated religious dogma. Most educated Solfrey understand that they are all humans, and rather than being a superior being Solfrey are the descendants of Necromancers.
Historical research by Archmage Qifeng Wun posited the theory of Necromancy, a human developed Magecraft used to control the undead. The so-called demon wars were not wars against demons, but rather wars against necromancers who were using demons as a tool to conquer the world. The demon wars was essentially wars between necromancers, and the Solfrey were the descendants of the winning necromancers.
As for why necromancers died out, Qifeng theorized the existence of a necromantic energy source called N-Power that necromancers used to control life and death. The war would likely have been fought between the tribes of necromancers over this N-Power. During the war the necromancers used up all the N-Power in the world and there are non left. This is why necromancers are no longer around, and why the Solfrey are no longer immortal. Please note that this is an incorrect theory, the N-Power is a ptolemaic invention, it does not exist.
Qifeng based his theories on mostly archeological evidence, which indicates that the Solfrey were the descendants of necromancers. However this means that Solfrey are equal to the commoners, and that the Solfrey system is unjust. This simple fact means that the theory is politically unpopular while being academically popular.
People who believe in this theory tend to think of themselves as "educated" and "woke". They tend to have a cynical view of their subjugation of the commoners rather than taking it as a necessity, out of blind faith. This group is a minority (30% of educated Solfrey fall in this camp).
This theory was partially responsible for the ideology of the Iexin clan, who saw themselves as being superior to other Solfrey due to being able to better utilize their commoner populace, due to not suppressing them as much.
Elite Solfrey Theory: "Natural Hierarchy and Demonic Temptation"
The official angels dogma was always meant to only be used as mass messaging and never stood up to scrutiny. But Solfrey society still evolved justifications for continuing the status quo.
But even if solfrey aren't another race, they are still the pure, anti-demon force. They enforce the social order and the restrictions against the spread of magecraft.
History teaches us this: People are jealous. There will always be those who are better at magecraft and those who are worse. The race who is worse must be highly and totally controlled. If not controlled, they will despair, channel their jealousy in unhealthy ways, and sell out us all with "cheating" methods such as demon worship.
The sophisticated Solfrey don't necessarily believe they're literally angels, but they understand a fundamental truth: magical talent creates natural hierarchies, and those at the bottom will always seek shortcuts. The demon wars proved this definitively.
Historical evidence shows:
- When necromancy was widespread, the less talented turned to demon worship for power
- These demon worshippers nearly destroyed civilization out of jealousy
- The division between Solfrey and commoners wasn't arbitrary - it was based on who remained "pure" (never consorted with demons) vs those whose bloodlines were tainted by demonic bargains
- Solfrey ancestors were simply those strong enough to win without cheating
This explains why:
- Magical knowledge must be restricted (to prevent the weak from being tempted)
- Solfrey rule is natural (they proved their superiority by not needing demonic help)
- The system isn't oppression but protection (saving commoners from their own weakness)
Yan Elite Addition: "Active Prevention of the Jealousy Cycle"
The Yan elites understand the same history but with a darker truth: the temptation never ended. They know that:
- Jealousy is eternal - there will always be those who want to "cheat" their way to power
- Demon worship wasn't stamped out, just driven underground
- Every generation produces commoners (and even weak Solfrey) who might turn to demons
The Yan's mission is therefore active prevention:
- Eliminate demon cults before they spread
- Maintain the social order that keeps the weak powerless and from being tempted
- Ensure advanced magecraft stays with those strong enough to resist shortcuts
- Maintain the primacy of the angels story so that people don't try to upend the social order, solfrey must remain superior, exalted, eternal.
Variations of the Truth
R4's Version of History
Has most of the core facts including the division and the fact that commoners are infested with demon souls and that solfrey do not have souls. Missing only some of the personal drama and jealousies that are at the core of the events. R4 tried to make things more rational and Kpor's greed and ambition look better.
Known by the CoD and is the truth that characters pursue.

Humans were originally not separated into Solfrey (soul-free) and Commoners, but were all just humans. Necromancy developed, a power of controlling souls. Not satisfied with the souls in our world, greedy necromancers began to summon souls from other worlds, which caused a clash with the demons.
Demons invaded our world but were eventually pushed back by Yan Hui. He was a powerful necromancer dictator who sought to completely subjugate the demons and take their power for himself, and his daughter from a mistress. He marched into the demon world (Annilm) with his necromancer army. The children of his real wife discovered this and worked out a deal with the demon queen and closed the portal, trapping him in the demon world.
The demon queen made her way to our world, where she agreed to a truce with the humans. The demon souls would split themselves into two in an event called The Division. This would keep the demons under the control of the necromancers. But in return the demons would be allowed to infest humans as host with the half-soul, a generally non-violent situation that still leaves the human in control. Those infested humans are commoners. However, the demon soul is still influencing the human and the situation is highly undesirable to people who understand what's going on. But to the commoner who was born this way with half a demon soul, they consider themselves one person, together with their demon soul, and are not aware that they are "infested".
However from the Solfrey point of view, the infested commoners are actually demons who would destroy them if they can undo the division. It's important to read "The Demon Wars" document to see the full drama of the story behind the events.
