NPC Interactions

  • You can mind control a limited number of people at once (hard to keep up the magic). The number is capped at ~20.
  • This

Throughout the game you have 3 types of NPCs you can talk with.

Heroes

  • Generally captured commoners warriors mages who you force to join your necromancer army. Because of your powers, they are utterly loyal to you.
  • You can choose to completely remove their own will, turning them into berserk war machines. This is an option you frequently choose, but the ones who you don't do that to stays sane and contribute finer skills to your efforts.
  • You frequently send out these heroes on missions to infiltrate, assassinate, do reconnaissance, kidnap, steal, and so on.
  • You also send out heroes and your undead army to destroy demons. Gameplay wise you get a lot of buffs and loot from killing demons, though story-wise it's a bit pointless and doesn't really move the story forward. This is just something you want to do because of your own hangups.
  • Also you hang out with them for entertainment and carnal pleasures as well.
  • Many detailed hero character questlines exist, and each one reveals more of the world, be it different cultures, more clues to the central mystery of the division, and so on.

Party members

  • Generally allies in your court like your wife, her companion cinean sung, your friends who hang out with you like Yao Hong, Shuqin Tao, the Researcher - Dou Rong, etc and close commoner servants like ZhenZhen, Weilan, Roulan.
  • In the game they generally offer passive buffs to reward you for going through their storylines or open up minor new paths and possibilities.
  • Most serious love interests fall in this category.
  • This is the heaviest and most interesting story category, full of drama sex and intrigue.
  • It's probably the least worldly category, with fewer things that directly impact the state of the world and the state of the world impacting it. That's a good thing for writing I think, as it means it's the most human, everything here is more influenced by emotions.

Nobles

  • Using negotiations, seduction, charisma, and so on you can form alliances with other nobles, both as the super villain necromancer and as your own polity of Len.
    • You can also give gifts of slaves and Ji after forming a slave trading company with your friend Yao Hong. Because these slaves are under your necromantic control, they're also a vector to control foreign nobles.
  • Using the chaos of the Necromancer invasions you can exploit the disruptions to Len as well, becoming a powerful state in its own right.
  • There are some well written nobles with great storylines here, like Genibel of Ban and Peizhi (R4) of Mireota.

Ultimately the goal of the game is to destroy the powers that be that opposes you, which is largely the Cult of Yan and the various kings that support it. Once the majority of states in the world surrender to your control, you "win". However there's a true ending where you discover the location of the True Empress and fight and kill C2 to fully finish the game.

Throughout the game you face as enemies a bevy of Yan elites and charismatic coalition leaders. With a few exceptions, you generally defeat them in game on the battlefield.
