For the magically adept, personal shields are a layer of magic that can protect from enemies both physical and magical. It's a layer of air that slows down and sometimes even stops all incoming projectiles while letting through innocuous touches. It works conceptually against magic attacks too and is generally a great defense. Mageknights imbue their sword with magic specifically designed to cut through this protection, without it war cannot be fought.

Maintaining this shield at all times is not something that takes no effort, so people can hire "shield bearers" mages to help maintain the shield. This can be done remotely from headquarters, and there are corporations that provide this service. Rich Solfrey do, and as a result they are rather immune to basic assassinations and the like from commoners.
